thought that i had finished essay. still 400 words short
"I feel so intensely the delights of shutting oneself up in a little world of one’s own, with pictures and music and everything beautiful."
Virginia Woolf (via moving-words)
Cathy
I avoided eye contact. You always hear stories of people being mugged as they stand getting money out at the ATM. Oh no, not me, not today.
Running on less than four hours sleep, tired and lethargic, i keyed in my PIN like clockwork. And still she hovered. I didn’t even need the money I was pulling out, simply killing time before classes started. Her complexion blotchy, her clothes disheveled and her eyes sad. She stood beside me like a child, obediently waiting for a parent.
“Could you spare some change for food?”
We walked in silence towards the semi-permanent cart, crowded with business types; eyes burning into the back of us- painfully out of place. I thought to myself that this must be how it feels. She looked down at her hands in quiet contemplation.
“I got given mexican fighting fish yesterday”. She spoke with such enthusiasm, her eyes lighting up like a flame to a match.”It has a red stripe right down its front”. She smiled to herself, pleased to have attained such a thing. Like a child at show and tell day, speaking quick words, much of it becoming a blur of noise and excitement.
“If you put two males in a tank together, they’ll kill each another”
The line moved forward and she pushed to the front of the line with purpose. I stood beside her, freshly dispersed twenty dollar note in hand.
“Can I get a warm skinny cappucino with four sugars. I don’t want it hot, just warm”
She was a demanding bitch. I smiled to myself
“three twenty thanks”. I took over the transaction, handing over the note to the cashier, met with slight confusion as she looked back and forth at the two of us; a rather unlikely pair. “what was the name for the order?”
“Cathy”
I moved uncomfortably as the cashier handed me my change and I slipped it into my wallet. “well, i should get to class”.
Cathy turned to me, looking into my eyes. “Well thanks, I really appreciate this”. She smiled and held out a hand.
“We can all use a coffee every now and then”. I smiled as we shook hands
“What goes around comes around, hey?”
“You’ve sure got that right, Cathy. It was lovely to meet you”
And in a strange way, it was.
